Mark Lander, a seasoned member of the local business committee, brings a wealth of experience to the table. Having witnessed the transformation of our town over the past 25 years, Mark reflects on its evolution from a quaint hub of small mom-and-pop establishments to a thriving national retail community. The driving force behind this shift? Loyal residents who steadfastly champion local businesses.
Mark’s own business, nestled among the Church Street and Mill Street / Dominion Road corridors, has forged strong connections with neighboring business owners. Together, they form a tight-knit network. As Mark prepares to commemorate 25 successful years in business, his unwavering commitment remains: to cater to the diverse needs of the local business landscape.
Here’s Mark’s perspective on the evolving business community in the Town of Vienna with the support of the TBLC:
Q: What is the TBLC’s involvement with local businesses?
A: The TBLC actively engages with local businesses, serving as a bridge between them and the town committee. Whether it’s organizing ribbon-cutting ceremonies or addressing concerns, their goal is to foster a positive environment for both new and existing businesses. Thanks to collaboration with the Economic Development Department, the Town effectively promotes public activities and resources. Furthermore, the TBLC can discuss with its business community on subcategories dealing with topics, such as policy and governance. Q: How has being a TBLC member shaped your experience in business to help others? A: Mark draws from his extensive 25-year business journey to offer valuable insights.
From Mark’s experience, ‘about 75 percent’ of his business has nothing to do with fitness, it's all about managing payroll, having adequate staffing, and so much more to be profitable and stay in business. Mark can relate to other business owners on the difficulties faced by entrepreneurship and is a supportive guide on the TBLC.
Q: What's next on Mark’s agenda?
A: Mark expresses that outreach is the pinnacle to further connecting with business owners on expanding what their needs are and emphasizes the importance of outreach to understand business owners’ diverse needs. By segmenting the town geographically, the TBLC aims to gather targeted feedback during meetings and gatherings. A key priority? Enhancing parking availability near business locations.
Be part of the conversation, share insights, and shape the future of our vibrant community! Most meetings take place on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. (except July and August) at Town Hall.
